The American Hospital Association (AHA) today released a new report that details the extraordinary financial pressures continuing to affect hospitals and health systems, as well as access to patient care.

The AHA appreciates the opportunity to provide the subcommittee with information for its hearing on Examining Existing Federal Programs to Build a Stronger Health Workforce and Improve Primary Care.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut yesterday largely dismissed a lawsuit alleging that Yale New Haven Hospital violated its fiduciary duties by selecting a retirement plan with excessive fees or poorly performing investments. Patients requiring additional care after a hospitalization — such as skilled nursing, behavioral health or therapy-at-home — face growing delays in accessing that care. Delays in discharges as patients move through the continuum of care can cause harm to patients’ health outcomes and can impact their quality of life by slowing their recovery.

Significant workforce shortages at facilities, such as those in post-acute and behavioral health, is making it more difficult for hospitals to efficiently and appropriately discharge patients. Hospitals have to bear the costs of caring for patients for those excess days without any reimbursement.

The AHA believes physical and mental health care are inextricably linked, and everyone deserves access to quality behavioral health care. We write to encourage Congress to take steps to provide relief to those seeking and administering behavioral health care.

Hospital and health system leaders can register for a Dec. 6 AHA Advocacy Day event in Washington, D.C. The in-person event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon ET. Attendees also can participate in a networking event on Monday evening, Dec. 5.
